Commentary paper
By studying about the struggles and challenges faced by international student, as an international student myself, I write my editorial paper in a first person view. By choosing to write in this style is because I want show the audience by using ethos on this topic, so it is easier for the audience to believe what I am talking about because it is based on my self experience.
Firstly, by stating the problem in the opening paragraph, I try to attract the audience so they have the willingness of continue reading the paper, hooking their attention. In the following paragraph, I state the opposition side of argument, showing that I have noticed there are opposition for this argument, and then by striking it down with the following essay, it can seem to be more persuasive then just only stating one side story. By using ethos, pathos and logos, I try to lead the audience to my side of view, let them see this problem in different side of views, maybe ending up changing the reader’s original knowledge about this.
What is different with the research paper and the editorial paper is that research paper is only giving a general view on both side, talking about what international students should improve and what universities in America should provide them. It is written in a formal style and it should flow smoothly without any of self emotions. It is an informative writing style which provides the readers a lot of facts and data, showing them that all the research done on this topic. On the other hand, an editorial paper is a more rhetorical situation argument. It is written with a purpose and more one side argument, using less formal or even informal style of writing to present my information. By doing this, using easier wording and communication style writing, the uses of pathos will be easier to reach out to the audience. This will let the audience feel that the editorial is communicating with them rather than being talked over.
Another difference between the research paper and the editorial paper is that whenever I use information in the research paper, I always provide citation. However, in the editorial paper I do not provide citation.
By writing the research paper and editorial paper, both of them have their own unique way of presenting the same information. In research paper, it is a formal, solid hard fact, informative writing without emotion or one side argument. Reversely, an editorial paper is providing an argument in a rhetorical way; it is more of a communication way to present the evidence towards the audience. It is written in an informal style with uses of ethos, pathos and logos to persuade the audience to think what the author thinks.

Deletions:

International Students calling for help
As an international student in the University of Arizona, I feel that it is a multicultural University which contains students from all around the world. Studies shown more and more International students are beginning to study in the University systems in America. Why? Because it is to the fact that nowadays higher education is considered a very important asset in many foreign cultures. In order to receive higher education, foreign students move far away from home, experiencing the new challenges in their new environment. However, international students in America face a big challenge, not only do we struggle with academic challenges, but sometimes suffer from severe psychological effects that often times precede their scholastic challenges.
If international students want to adapt the culture in the country they are in, it has been said that it is our own responsibility to understand the culture we are in and adjust it by us own. Another research suggests the reason why we are facing these difficulties is because we are used to the teacher as parental figures, and expect to be told what to do rather than raising our hands and speak freely in class. It is also our responsibility to adapt by learning and performing the appropriate skills to fit into a host culture.
However, studies show international students feel pressured by cultural difference and have trouble fitting into society is actually because they feel that American culture is offensive.
Why some says the American culture is offensive? Sometimes we seek support in our American peers, but often find that the relationships we make with American students rarely continue to grow into meaningful friendship. It was also shown in a survey result of international students that 41% of foreign students treated American students in a friendly fashion, and 6% did not attempt to make friends with American students at all.
Even though we find it difficult to make American friends, but we still try to treat them friendly, hoping to find someone that may return us with same friendliness, which are rarely found.
According to the survey done in the University of Arizona, we know that many international students don’t make friends outside of their culture. It is always more comfortable to live in a new environment with familiarities of home. Even so, international students should try to make American friends, but why is it so rare to see? The reason of this is because 88% struggled with American slang, which means that they have difficulty even in daily life communication. Communication is the link between one another, and if there are difficulties on this link, then it is even harder to reach to each other.
Studies shown relationships with fellow students and faculty members have a positive effect on the mental developments and psychological well being of international students. Making friends cross-culturally with native students in America is an extremely important step for international students to become successful in United States University environments. Through communication, we can improve our understanding and knowledge in America culture and norms. Even though foreign students have trouble with English as a second language, but universities need to address these issues to help their international students to succeed.

Deletions:
Our Proposal:
Proposal:

Our group, Team America, intends on studying the relationship between drug abuse and academic performance to find out whether it really makes a difference. Most people believe drug abuse, including alcohol, makes the partying increase and the grades decrease; however, there are also some who claim they intake large quantities of drugs on a regular basis and still maintain good grades.

We plan to collect a large data sampling by creating a survey with many questions regarding drugs and grades. The surveys will be dispersed at the mall to random people. We plan to have a box on the survey for people to indicate specifically which drug he or she uses. We plan to ask questions such as: Which drugs to you use of a regular basis? What is your G.P.A. and class? How much time do you spend studying per week? How many days a week do you use drugs?
Commentary

After studying the challenges of international students, I chose to write my research and editorial papers on what issues international students struggle with while they are trying to study here in the United States. I think that it is important for universities to understand that there are issues that foreign students struggle with that universities can help fix. I have learned that while there are programs to help international students at universities, they do not aid them in ways that are sufficient to see them succeed.
Even though I rewrote my research paper to fit the style of an editorial paper I chose not to change the organizational style of the paper too much. I kept the thesis in the same spot for each paper, at the end of the paragraphs. In my research paper I started out with background information from the literature review. In the editorial paper, the first body paragraph was a background review of the research I had done. I did not cite my information in the editorial paper, which is a notable difference throughout the paper. The other paragraphs of my editorial paper could be compared to the literature review and my independent research sections of the research paper. Overall, the organization of the editorial paper was similar to the research paper. The organization in my research paper was well formatted and so I chose to follow a similar format in my editorial paper.
There is a big difference between writing for a newspapers audience and a research papers. Newspapers have a very general public audience. The daily wildcat researches a large amount of college students on campus, as well as faculty and possibly people in the public. In my editorial paper I chose to use more conversation words to connect with the audience. I also tried to use emotion and show that I was interested in the topic I was talking about. Along with showing interest in the topic, I felt I also needed to show that I had done research on the topic so the audience didn’t think my editorial was all emotion and no facts. In a research paper with an academic audience, the words have to be lexically dense. In order to connect with a general audience I knew that I needed to change the vocabulary so that people would be able to understand and connect with the paper. The rhetorical changes in the editorial paper from the research paper are important because they create some of the biggest changes in the style.
When creating an editorial piece from a research piece it is necessary to change the voice so that the audience the paper is being projected to can connect with the author. The voice in a research paper is factual and not conversational. When writing an editorial paper a writer needs to choose words that promote connection between the author and the audience. An editorial is also a persuasive kind of paper, which is a change in style and tone. In my paper I tried to choose words and facts that would connect with the audience as well as persuade them to believe that my opinion was correct. There is a shift in tone and style between an editorial paper and a research paper that accounts for a major difference between the two papers.
After writing a research paper and an editorial paper it is easy to see the distinctive differences. A research paper consists of factual data with academic vocabulary. An editorial paper is very different from a research paper in that its audience is very difference and the tone and style of the paper is not the same as a research paper.

Deletions:
Challenges for International Students
The University of Arizona is not just made up of American students. There is a plethora of foreign students making their way around campus everyday, soaking up American culture with every step. Every year America sees a rise in the number of foreign students that choose to leave their homes in far away lands and come to the United States for college. Many foreign students come to American universities in hopes to receive a quality education, learn speak English more fluently and have a cultural experience that will last a lifetime. What they often time don’t realize is that there are challenges that come with leaving home behind. School can be difficult, and making bonds with other native students has proved to be a challenge as well. So who is going to help these international students acclimate to their new environment when they have left so much behind? Universities need to take responsibility for their international students because foreign students studying in the United States need assistance in adjusting and succeeding in their foreign environments.
The University of Arizona, like other major colleges around the country, has set up programs to help international students. These programs group foreign students of common nationalities together to help them feel more comfortable in a United States university. They encourage conversation and interaction interracially. While comfort can be found in an environment of common backgrounds and interests, is this really a health way for foreign students to adjust to life here? Studies suggest it is not. When foreign students are conversing with other foreign students it does not promote understanding and adaptation to American culture. It is understood that international students come to the United States for the change to learn and not necessarily partake in and comply with the culture here. However, studies show that when a foreign student is aware of the customs of American culture, they do better academically. One study talked about how many Asian international students do not understand the concept of raising their hand in class to offer their input or to ask questions. This is because of the fact that in Asian culture the teacher is seen as an authority figure of parent and it is not appropriate to question authority. If an international student had a native student to confide in, perhaps this misconception of American classroom procedures would not happen. It takes interaction with American students for the foreign students studying here to truly adapt to and understand the American way of life. The current systems Universities have implemented of segregating the culture to make foreign student more comfortable is possible doing a disservice to them. Studies have shown that Japanese international students spend 82% of their free time and 88% of their study time with other Japanese students. This is not promoting understanding how to live and study in America.
Universities nation wide need to evaluate their international students and consider offering a different kind of program that would actually benefit foreign students. Providing a cross-cultural club, and encouraging foreign students to attend meetings and become active members, would help them to be better students. It is not just in the classroom that we grow as students. Through many different kinds of human interaction we can find ourselves learning far beyond what we imagined. With the growing amount of international students coming to American universities every year, faculty of universities nation wide should be concerned about seeing those students succeed.

Deletions:
