Americans seem to be getting smarter. This is discussed in the middle of page 140. The IQ tests are getting harder but still, the American people are performing well on them. Johnson suggests that this trend is related to the increase in media, television, and gaming. I believe this to be true. I read the whole book before this class and noticed that television shows such as the Sopranos and the Simpsons are making us smarter in that they require an audience to "fill in" the hidden meaning behind cultural jokes and so forth. Also, shows such as the Sopranos and 24 require audiences to follow several intensive plots as well as remember events from prior episodes that are being refrenced several shows after. The audience must remain alert and focused in order to put the shows intent od plot in order so the viewer can grasp the full concept of the show.
This is all good and dandy, however, one must also think that standardized testing is on the rise. Back home every student need to take tests known as regents. Students must pass a regent test in everygrade for every department of education in order to pass the year. Tests such as the ACTS and SATS also are taken by almost all high school students. Is it new media that is allowing for this rise in intelligence or is it just that of standardized testing?
I would believe more that the use of new media has helped this trend. Standardized testing has been around for some time. New media as we know it today is complicated and requires an intelligent viewer. In order for this to happen New Media needed to slowly accelerate to become the speed demon it is today.
