This is a Wiki about my current book obsession, The Dark Tower.

The Dark Tower

The Dark Tower series, written by Stephen King, is based on Robert Browning's poem Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came. This seven novel series follows Roland Deschain of Gilead, the last gunslinger in a world that has moved on. The series original genesis is the gunslinger's journey across the desert. "The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed." Roland follows the man in black, also known as Walter and many other titles, but unlike most stories, this one moves backwards. From the desert we travel back to a man Roland met along the way, then to a small town where the man in black had set an insideous trap, and finally we move forward again to where the gunslinger meets a boy named Jake who has died in another world and dies again when Roland lets him drop. Finally meets the man in black for the first time in hundreds, maybe thousands of years.

This type of unique storytelling makes King's work not only interesting, but revolutionary. In the second book, The Drawing of the Three, the gunslinger awakes after his long palaver with Walter on an endless beach where he is attacked by giant monster lobsters, dubbed lobstrosities. Dying from infection, Roland crawls upon a free standing door on the beach. Having little other choice he opens the door, and finds himself looking out of another man's eyes on a jet heading for New York City. In essence, Eddie Dean, a Heroin addict in a load of trouble, whose world Roland is viewing is drawn into Roland's world. They come upon another door down the beach and meeta woman with split personalities named Odetta Holmes/Detta Walker who lost her lower legs to a man called the Pusher, who shoved her in front of an incoming commuter train. Together, these three unfortunate souls set out to find the mythical Dark Tower.

Along the way, they again meet Jake of New York and draw him through a magical door, encounter monsters and villains, and even end up at the Emerald Palace on highway 70 in Kansas. We learn of Roland's past in Gilead, and in a town called Meijis where he meets and loses the love of his life. We watch Susannah, formerly Odetta, and Eddie fall in love, and see Jake meet a furry friend named Oy, all while on a quest toward the Tower.

The Dark Tower is the nexus of all things and all worlds. It is said that in the upper room of the Tower is something immensely powerful. However, in the lower rooms of this Tower is the Crimson King, the evil one who is trying to bring about the destruction of the Tower. Held up by six Great Beams, each divided by the Tower, the nexus of all things stands, controlling fate with its force of destiny called ka. Together the Crimson King and two companies, Sombra and North Central Positronics, are trying to fell the Dark Tower by breaking the Beams which support it. Three beams have broken long ago, another is being broken as they journey. Roland and his ka-tet must fight the villains, stop the Breakers of the Beams, and reach the Tower before it falls to save all worlds.

The books in the Dark Tower series are:
The Gunslinger
The Drawing of the Three
The Wastelands
Wizard and Glass
Wolves of the Calla
Song of Susannah
The Dark Tower
