Welcome to the wiki pages associated with the Penn State course: Technology, Mediation, and Second Language Acquisition: Research and Praxis

This wiki will be used for keeping a running commentary of issues and ideas that come out in classroom face-to-face discussion. Individual entries will be date and time stamped.

In addition, the wiki can be used by individual students and working group teams to keep track of references and text to be used for class projects and ideas for pedagogical innovations.

Eventually, in collaboration with the University of Arizona and University of New Mexico classes, we hope to compile a Technology and Language Education "Wictionary" that will include contributions from participants across the three courses.

Notes for January 27

What do we use blogs for?

  • Personal online identities using L2 (such as Facebook-type page, listing of interests), followed by a sequence of
  • Journal entries (as instructors we need to ask ourselves what we let/ask students to do with their own/other blogs)
  • Q-blog assignments (asynchronous interaction) where ss ask questions and other Ss or T respond
  • Academic (book reviews or reports; conventional but visible to everyone in the class)
  • Short/timed writes ("3 minute papers," written in-class for Ss to re-represent to themselves knowledge discussed in class; could be the start of a full-fledged blog entry)

What are wikis suited for?

  • Peer review in writing class (sharing documents back and forth)
  • A wiki activity (use the wiki to produce a wiki entry on Wikipedia)
  • Wiktionary (Annotated bibliography; etc)
