Philosophy of Teaching
APLNG 589
I have taught a number of English courses in my career to now, the majority to undergraduate students in China. In China I have largely worked with English major students, but have taught students of other majors at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Among the courses that I have most enjoyed teaching were those which involved giving in-service training to current university English teachers. In the U.S., I have also taught students in college preparation ESL courses and refugees, so my experiences in teaching have been fairly broad.
During the time I have been teaching, my ideas about how to teach have changed quite a bit, but I think one idea has been fairly constant from the time of my first full time teaching position, because of the disappointment I met there. After getting my Masters in TESL, I felt that I knew how I was supposed to teach.	As an MA student I had not only learned how to use the best teaching methods, but also knew why they were effective methods. When I went to China and tried to use those “effective” methods, I found that they were not well received at all. I spent the next two years trying to discover how to take what I believed to be principles of effective teaching and apply them to the Chinese students I was supposed to help. It was at this time that I realized that “methods” are not just techniques to be applied across situations indiscriminately.
From that time I began to see teaching as the art of helping people get to the places they want to go, through means which they understand as useful to achieving those goals. As a teacher I need both a conviction about what I believe about learning and teaching, and a readiness to learn more about these areas. When I understand how learning takes place, then I can see more clearly the number of ways to help students accomplish it. The problem with techniques, like those I took to China, is that they were not flexible enough to be used effectively across all situations and all learners. Now I am much more interested in taking what I understand about learning and figuring out how to apply it in a way that is meaningful to the people I am teaching. This is not only a question of culture or location, because what is meaningful to students changes over time. For example, learning to use technologies which may be relevant to my students’ way of interacting with people and information, is a current aim of mine.
My understanding of the teacher’s role is that the teacher facilitates the process of learning. I feel that worthwhile teaching will be measured by the extent to which students have gained new understandings and skills. This is a challenge, since the teacher also has some responsibility to create the desire to learn as well as the environment in which learning can take place. Thus for me, one of the roles of a teacher is to hold an interesting and attainable goal before the students, and walk along side encouraging them to reach it. When students see the activities of class as helping them towards a goal, rather than merely completing a set of activities, then they can really begin to learn. Helping students recognize their progress towards the goal(s) is also critical for maintaining motivation, especially in language learning.
A teacher also has to create an environment conducive to learning. The teacher has opportunities to impact the environment through the treatment of students: I believe that it is critical to show value for and respect for each individual in the class. This can involve allowing students to show their abilities through making contributions, whether giving them chances to express unique viewpoints or display skills in areas outside the narrow focus of the class. When students feel they are valued, it will give them greater confidence in learning and guide them to value their classmates, making it more likely they will expand their view to understanding that they can learn from one another. Furthermore, when students see that their ideas and other aspects of their lives can enter into the classroom or be affected by it, learning is likely to be much more effective. These factors can make a classroom become a dynamic learning community.
I have both studied and taught Chinese and this gives me a real appreciation for the difficulties which second language learners face. In addition to being a teacher, I have also held positions as a teacher trainer and supervisor, so I know the challenges involved in teaching, at both classroom and program levels. There are no easy answers as to how to teach: what an instructor will do effectively in one class, will not necessarily be effective in another, because even if no other external factors have changed, the students have changed. This is for me what makes teaching exciting – it is never the same. There are always changing conditions, different people to work with, and new ways to try to support students in learning.

This week was even less “internety” than usual since I had my exams to take. Usually, I spend more time on the web looking for information for the class I teach (cultural stuff, pictures), for the classes I take and for futile, useless but fun things (clothing, etc.).
This week, my Internet use was mostly professional or emails focused.
Let’s see… do I wear a fur coat or a swimming suit today?
Analyzing these data, I am surprised to see how many junk emails I get a day. Also, I know that these days were not representative of my internet use. I am a big fan of emails and I usually send them for nothing (I do not mind sending one to my office neighbor…). Moreover, I know that my internet use increases when I have a project or a paper to write. Also, when I have more time, I like to look at the news from France and some other leisure things.

I was most impressed with the fact that it was very hard to separate on-line computing from the other computing I do. Since I do spend a certain amount of time in front of the computer most days (planning lessons and writing assignments which are not internet related), it was really hard to stop and write down every time I checked my e-mail. I need something which logs me - it was too tedious to do it myself. I also feel that there is so much variety, that I'm not quite sure what the "typical" days were. Anyway, here's what I came up with, to the best of my ability.
Day 1: 4 hours on ANGEL - since I was setting up a lot of new things on the site

50 minutes on-line research (for my own studies)

Chat 1: This chat was on AIM with a friend of mine in NY and was really short. The only things that are charateristic of chat that I can find in this one is the use of short utterances and extending words for intonation changes (eg ahhhhhhhh).

irishrine: Hey
Careyrr: Hi
irishrine: Whatcha doing?
Careyrr: Just got home
irishrine: Ahhh. How was class?
Careyrr: Boooooring
irishrine: No fun.
irishrine: Thanks for sending me the email. Hopefully
your dad will get back to you
Careyrr: I know - I'm still looking too
irishrine: It's cool. i'll help you look this weekend
Careyrr: I purposely saved the piece of paper
somewhere, but I don't know where
irishrine: hmmm, Tis a mystery
Careyrr: yup
irishrine: I'm trying to figure out what i want to do this
wekeend. I'm all like a kid in a candy store coming to
NYC
Careyrr: I know!
Careyrr: What's on the list so far?
irishrine: Haven't had time to really plan. Been busy
today. But I emailed Jimmer to let him know i'll be in
town
irishrine: I haven't heard back from him yet
irishrine: I'll have a couple things I'll want to do by
tomorrow
Careyrr: well, definitely let me know!
irishrine: will do
irishrine: Since you just got home, I'll let you settle in.
Just saying hi
Careyrr: ok talk to you later!
irishrine: bye
Careyrr: bye!
Chat 2: This was a chat on MSN Messenger with my friend who is teaching in Japan. Very "IM"-type language is the use of acronyms (eg LOL) and extending words for intonation changes (eg ahhhhhhh). There is also the use of hypertext links for quick access to other pages.
japanmurphy says:
Emily, are you there?
Emily says:
Hey! Yeah, I just woke up and logged on
Emily says:
How's it going?
japanmurphy says:
Going good. It`s 11:15pm here in Fukuoka. I`m sipping on wine, trying to figure out how to build a webpage.
Emily says:
Ahhh, funny, i was doing the same thing 2 days ago (webpage part)
Emily says:
Do you have Dreamweaver?
japanmurphy says:
I have a 30 day trial version but I`m downloading it now off of Shareaza.
japanmurphy says:
I like Dreamweaver because you can choose HTML or WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get).
japanmurphy says:
There is still so much I don`t understand.
Emily says:
I like Dreamweaver. That's what i use. But you can use the cheater way too, whic his go to a personal website that you like (style-wise) and go up to "View", "Source" and it'll give you hte HTML coding. Then you copy and paste the whole thing into your webpage
Emily says:
I always like HTML
Emily says:
Once you copy the source code into your Dreamweave page, you can change the html codes to your preferences but all the structring is already done
Emily says:
Check this website out. I used it for Hypermedia & Ed. It's a great reference.
http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/reference/html_cheatsheet/
japanmurphy says:
That`s really cool advice. I`ll try doing that from my friend`s bellydancing website, www.atkins.iinet.net.au
Emily says:
Cool. Good call. So how've you been otherwise
japanmurphy says:
Good. A bit slow on the work front. The semester is winding down. Possibility of a new romantic interest in my life.
Emily says:
Ooooh, very nice. Do tell
japanmurphy says:
She works for a travel agency. She speaks Japanese, English, and bits of French and Greek. Well-traveled, bookish type but curious and adventurous.
Emily says:
Wow, sounds great. Is she Japanese? or American?
japanmurphy says:
Japanese girl. Lots of em here on this island.
Emily says:
lol
Emily says:
Very nice. Well keep me updated. Sounds promising. Wish i had something to tell but I don't
japanmurphy says:
How are your classes?
Emily says:
Good. busy. Feels like it's the end of the semester instead of the beginning work-wise
Emily says:
Oh, but did I tell you that Sting is coming at the end of the semester and guess who has front row, center tickets?!
japanmurphy says:
No way. I love Sting. He is a sexual guru. Er, I mean, so they say in interviews in Playboy magazine I read.
Emily says:
Emily says:
I know. He's like the Tantra king
Emily says:
I'm so jealous of myself. He's amazing in concert too.
Emily says:
He's my fave male solo artist
japanmurphy says:
My younger sister is going to sing Hey, Jude with Paul McCartney? in the Superbowl halftime show.
Emily says:
japanmurphy says:
Let me know what Sting sings for his encores.
japanmurphy says:
Does he still do Police songs?
Emily says:
Okay, will do. Wait, is your sister singing by herself or with a choir or what?
Emily says:
Yeah, he does
Emily says:
He almost always ends with Every Breath You Take
japanmurphy says:
No, there are hundreds of em that will rush the stage to sing at Paul`s feet.
Emily says:
Oh, heehee. SO I won't be able to pick her out? Still, that kicks so much ass!
Emily says:
Oh, I finally started my own blog this past weekend
japanmurphy says:
I told her to show one of her breasts to the cameraman!
japanmurphy says:

Chat 1: This chat was on AIM with a friend of mine in NY and was really short. The only things that are charateristic of chat that I can find in this one is the use of short utterances and extending words for intonation changes (eg ahhhhhhhh).

irishrine: Hey
Careyrr: Hi
irishrine: Whatcha doing?
Careyrr: Just got home
irishrine: Ahhh. How was class?
Careyrr: Boooooring
irishrine: No fun.
irishrine: Thanks for sending me the email. Hopefully
your dad will get back to you
Careyrr: I know - I'm still looking too
irishrine: It's cool. i'll help you look this weekend
Careyrr: I purposely saved the piece of paper
somewhere, but I don't know where
irishrine: hmmm, Tis a mystery
Careyrr: yup
irishrine: I'm trying to figure out what i want to do this
